Las abreviaturas (formas abreviadas de palabras o frases) y acrónimos (palabras derivadas de las iniciales de la frase) se utilizan comúnmente en la redacción técnica. En la primera aparición en el texto el término se menciona en su totalidad, con la abreviatura entre paréntesis. En el resto del texto se debe utilizar la abreviatura. Sin embargo, las abreviaturas no se deberían utilizar en el título ni en el resumen.
Las abreviaturas y acrónimos estándar de los compuestos químicos utilizados en el Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC) y que no requieren una definición especial.
