Nihonium, discovered by a RIKEN group led by Kosuke Morita (1957-), has become the first element on the periodic table found in Asia. In 2004, Morita's group created a single atom of the isotope nihonium-278 by colliding zinc-70 ions with bismuth-209 target. Nihon is one of the two ways to say 'Japan' in Japanese, and literally mean 'the Land of Rising Sun'.
